A series of cloud-shaped light boxes hang like droplets at the entrance to Albany Stadium Pool, adding colour and vibrancy to the space. As if hanging from the ceiling, this eye-catching work by Seung Yul Oh allows art to become part of an everyday experience for pool-goers.

The series of 11 colourful light boxes vary in size and colour, inspired by water droplets. Oh has also added lighting to the work, which adjusts as the daylight levels change.

As well as *Drop a Loop*, Oh also created [*Upon a Pond*](/artworks/4000), a large, interactive piece that stands outside the entrance to the pool. Both artworks showcase water in different states and celebrate the sense of fun associated with a trip to the pool.

Drop a Loop

A sculpture consisting of clusters of colourful bubbles, with mist coming out of giant, bendy straws welcomes visitors to Albany Stadium Pool. Children can climb the structures and jump up to reach the puffing water vapour.

This large-scale interactive artwork by Seung Yul Oh was designed to capture a sense of fun and play. In creating *Upon a Pond*, Oh was inspired by the idea of water as ‘always changing’, as well as our interactions with water – such as bubbles rising up to its surface and a swimmer’s inhalation and exhalation of breath. Bubbles became an important creative element for the artist – the sculptural bubbles, which vary in size, come out one end of the oversized bendy white straws, while high-pressure water puffs from the other.

This works brings a sense of surprise and playfulness to the public space outside the pool. As well as *Upon a Pond*, Oh created [*Drop a Loop*](/artworks/4001), a series of cloud-shaped light boxes that hang like colourful droplets at the pool entrance. Both artworks showcase water in different states and celebrate the fun associated with a trip to the pool.

Upon a Pond

Running alongside the Wairau Valley stream on Auckland’s North Shore, *Transitional Line* explores themes of transformation. Artist Elke Finkenhauer invites people to explore the area, and to think about movement as they walk in and around the flowing steel sculpture.

The artwork is made up of two contrasting elements; a silvery line of varying size that subtly makes its way along the concrete paths, connecting up with gentle curves of weathered steel that rise up from the ground. Linking the walking paths with an open public space, the structure forms the centrepiece for the redesign of the Croftfield Lane stormwater pond project, completed in 2016 by Boffa Miskell for Wai Ora-Healthy Waterways.

The Croftfield Lane project focussed on stormwater, as well as creating seating areas and community walkways. The project received an award of excellence in the 2016 NZILA Landscape Architecture Awards.

Transitional Line

At first sight, this larger-than-life child's flotation ring bounds down the grassy slope of Oruamo Domain in Glenfield. Three and a half metres in diameter, the scale and size of the artwork demands our attention asking, 'what is it', and 'is it for real'?

The polished stainless-steel surface invites a closer look, it reflects the surrounding environment of the domain, the sky, and even your own reflection becomes part of the artwork.

*Soft Focus … Summer's Day* is by artist David McCracken and is a continuation of a series of works that presents objects of wonder and optimism, in part a response to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

"I am looking for immediacy and to 'break the fourth wall' with the vertical orientation and placement at the bottom of the hill. This suggests dynamism ...that something is happening - these are things that can be universally appreciated and need no historical knowledge, but which are also easily apprehended from a moving vantage, as many people will be as they drive past," says McCracken.
