This striking stainless-steel sculpture can be found at the northern tip of Sanctuary Point, by the Pakuranga Rotary Walkway. Standing along the shore of the Tāmaki Estuary, *Ngā Manu* is a kinetic sculpture, designed to rotate with the force of the breeze.  Three large koru shapes at the top of the mast turn in the wind as do each of the nine bird forms flying off the koru.

Artist Dion Hitchens says "*Ngā Manu* refers to the whakataukī (proverb) e koekoe te tūī, e ketekete te kāka, e kuukuu te kererū, sourced from the book *Aroha* by Dr Hinemoa Elder. It literally translates as - the tūī squawks, the kāka chatters, the kererū coos - and references, in this case, the idea that it takes all kinds of people to create a community. The bird call can be seen as the bird's identity, different languages for each bird, yet they all work together with the forest to help create a better environment and community. This proverb is also about acceptance and non-judgement, how can we be more like the birds and accept diversity as normal, working together to create a better community and environment?"

The Pakuranga Rotary Walkway extends nine kilometres from Prince Regent Drive, Farm Cove, in the north, southwest to Panmure Bridge. It's perfect for a walk, jog, bike ride or skate. Beneath *Ngā Manu* is a great place to take a break during your travels. Not only can you admire the sculpture, but you can also enjoy sweeping views up and down the Tāmaki Estuary from the water's edge.

Ngā Manu

This bright, sculptural screen located on Panmure's busy Queens Road separates carpark from footpath enhancing the main street for passers-by.  Artist Caroline Robinson (1968 - 2021) was Lead Artist on the urban design consulting team tasked with revitalising several town centres in Auckland City in the early 2000s, including Panmure. Robinson's company, CABAL, was until 2021, a creative studio working with communities to integrate art and cultural practices into civic projects and urban environments.

*Earth Sun* was commissioned as part of the Stage Two Queens Road development in 2007. Red steel arcs are woven together to form a curved barrier, says the artist, "I sculpt and build with durable materials such as stone, steel and earth, animating public and private spaces with a raw physicality and mythology."

Robinson was an artist, designer, author, and a facilitator of large-scale public infrastructure projects. Born in Stratford, Taranaki, Robinson's visual arts 'markers' are found in many places around the country.   She was one of the founding creative team members for 'The Big Idea' - the online hub for New Zealand's creative people.

Earth Sun

Each of these sixteen wooden poles is crowned with a unique laser-cut steel icon. *Totems* was a community art collaboration between artist Dion Hitchens and students from Tāmaki College.  Totems are keepsakes, as well as more traditionally representing ancestry, people, land, and events. The students were asked to create a design that acknowledged their origins. Hitchens then cut the metal and fitted the artworks to the poles.

This collaboration was designed to create ownership and connection with the local community. These works were part of a larger project in Talbot Park which included 1800 ceramic tiles painted by primary and intermediate children in the local area.

The project was part of the Talbot Park Housing New Zealand community renewal, a joint venture with the Auckland City Council.

Totems

Marking the entrance to Talbot Reserve in Glen Innes, the four-metre-high contemporary Pacific sculpture *Vaka Kavela* is a celebration of life, inspired by the magic of a midnight swim in the ocean.

Commissioned in 2007 as part of the Talbot Park Housing New Zealand community renewal project, the sculpture was carved by artist Ioane Ioane with deep rippling grooves from a slab of macrocarpa, then glazed black with marine epoxy resin to emulate the dark lapping of water at night.

Ioane's works are informed by his Samoan heritage, and this particular sculpture is a tribute to the artist’s ocean-loving son, Kavela. *Vaka Kavela* is similar to an earlier sculpture by Ioane, which was created as a memorial to Kavela’s twin brother Keoni, who died at birth. The sculpture, a taonga or living treasure, references a 'spirit canoe' crossing an unknown ocean and is permanently displayed at Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira.
